This adult German Shepherd is relishing a vigorous tug-of-war game with his owner. They are using a hard ball on a rope, which the dog will release on command. The owner can then throw the ball, which the dog will be keen to retrieve so the game can continue. (mezzotint)

Another treat loved by many dogs is cat biscuits, especially if they think they have stolen them from the cat. They are a handy size for most breeds, can be carried loose in the pocket without too much mess and are readily available.

If you have a really greedy dog you can probably use his normal dry food. Remember to watch your dog’s weight. Regular weighing can be very useful to help you monitor his daily ration. It is quite surprising how quickly small treats can add up in terms of calories (as unfortunately many trainers know!)

Safe and handy toys

Toys can be almost anything that your dog likes to play with provided they are safe and handy to use. The age and breed of your dog will also have a bearing on the preferred toy.

Puppies who still have milk teeth are generally better off with a soft toy as a hard one can hurt their gums and knock their teeth out. When the puppy is teething it is possible that his mouth will be very sore and he may not want to play with any type of toy.

Special training toys

Your dog can have a selection of toys of his own to chew on and play with whenever he likes; but training toys should not be left lying around for him to play with as he pleases. Training toys should belong to the owner, who will determine where, when and for how long they will be played with. This means they will retain their novelty value in the dog’s eyes.

Lured into the ‘Sit’, this dog knows he will get no reward if he jumps up. (Need to Know? Dog Training © HarperCollins by Tracy Morgan Animal Photography)
